Oil on board
Signed and dated lower left. A couple seated on a bench beneath a blooming monkeypod tree on a shady path leading to a residence with a small porch.

In 1847, two monkeypod seeds were brought to Hawaii from Mexico. One was planted in Koloa, and the second planted in Honolulu. The latter was removed when construction of the Alexander Young Hotel began. At the time of its construction in 1900, the Alexander Young Hotel was the largest edifice in Honolulu and the foremost hotel in the Pacific.

    Provenance:
  • Charles Furneaux was born in Boston in 1835. He settled in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1880 where his career as an artist and his reputation as a landscape specialist began. Furneaux was among several early artist visitors attracted to the islands of Hawaii, including Robert Dampier, Titian Ramsay Peale, John Lafarge, and Jules Tavernier. Furneaux quickly became one of the "Old Masters" of the Volcano School, with his earliest significant body of work depicting the eruption of Kilauea in 1880-81. In addition to his distinction for graphic volcano realism, Furneaux was famed for his landscapes, as well as still lifes of island flora.
As he began to cultivate friendships with members of the Hawaiian royal family, he received numerous portrait commissions. In August 1881, Furneaux held an exhibition of his Hilo paintings in the Judiciary Building at Honolulu. It was the first one-man art exhibition to be held in Hawaii. Today, his paintings are rare as the result of a studio fire, which destroyed much of his work in 1895. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections including The Bishop Museum (Honolulu), the Brooklyn Museum, the Honolulu Museum of Art, Iolani Palace (Honolulu) and Mount Holyoke College Art Museum (South Hadley, Massachusetts).
