Maurice (Valadon) Utrillo was born in Paris in 1883 to Marie-Clementine Valade, who painted under the name of Suzanne Valadon, with unknown paternity. Suzanne was a well-known model for such painters as Renoir and Puvis de Chavannes before discovering her own talent for drawing and painting. Utrillo was predisposed to alcoholism at a young age, and further suffered from schizophrenia, so in 1904 Suzanne encouraged Utrillo to pursue drawing and painting to help him cope. Inspired by his childhood neighborhood, he fervently painted the streets, buildings, fountains, and avenues, attracting the attention of art critics by 1910. The years between 1909 and 1914, became known as Utrillo's 'White Period' (période blanche), and represents the peak of Utrillo's creativity. During this time, he mixed glue, plaster or cement with his paint to obtain a palette of whites for which he became famous. Utrillo was forever plagued by deteriorating health and alcoholism. He died in May 1955. His work can be found in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., Dallas Museum of Art, Tate, Art Institute of Chicago, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and Moderna Museet.
