Description:

Raymond James Stuart
American, b. 1882
Mid-Century Scene, 1941
Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left
A brother and sister with their dog, the boy with a duck whistle, their fishing boat parked amongst bulrushes to watch a flock of geese in the evening sky overhead. Likely a calendar illustration in rotogravure. Unframed, numerous notations to verso.

    Dimensions:
  • Stretcher: 28 x 21 in. (71.1 x 53.3 cm.)
  • Artist Name:
  • Raymond James Stuart
  • Medium:
  • Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left
  • Condition:
  • It looks as if someone with black soot on their fingers touched the painting at the very top of the work at center, where it is as if the boy is shooting a spit ball directly at the middle ‘soot' spot which is just behind the flying birds. This seems like a surface issue, but do know those 3 spots are there. Both bottom corners, the very precise corners at the bottom, have very small wear holes from years of being on the stretcher at the ‘point' to both bottom corners. Also as seen in the images online, the very bottom edge, left of center shows you a small piece of torn canvas. And there is a 4.5" x 2" wood block attached at the center of the right side (it came in attached, so we left it) – you will see it clearly with the view of the back side of the painting as those images will show online. In the yellow orange sky you can see the inside borders of the wooden stretcher showing through to the front.
