555 Washington Ave...
From Selkirk’s downtown St. Louis beginnings in 1830 until now, location has played a vital role in the legacy of our firm. As with many late Georgian period established auction houses, architecture sets the tone for exhibition and live auction. In the case of Selkirk’s present downtown residence, form not only follows function but at times absolutely domineers it and has a history of doing so. The Selkirk Gallery is housed in the venerable and rare 1876 Victorian facade of cast iron originally known as the Finney Building. The structure was joined by order of The May Company in 1898 to its westward neighbor, the elegant Italianate building at 555 Washington, to create a “Commercial Palace”. Alterations included an impressive domed glass entry facade to Washington Avenue that opens its revolving doors to Selkirk’s offices today. The combined atmosphere and presentation allows Selkirk to cater to the luxury markets’ emotions, understand taste levels, and engage desires. We invite you to the experience.
