Description:

DAVID STIRLING (AMERICAN, 1887-1971)
Winter landscape, oil on artist board, signed lower right. Atmospheric landscape with bare trees and rocks against snow covered mountains and a colorful sky. Gilt frame.

Artist Bio: David Stirling was born in 1887 to a large pioneering family. He grew up in Corydon, Iowa and was the youngest of eight siblings, but the first to graduate high school. After high school, he studied at the Cummings Art School in Des Moines, Iowa, from 1906 to 1907. He then went on to further his education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago from 1908 to 1909.

Stirling married a woman named Kitty Park, and they split their time between his studio in Corydon which was located over the local bank, and his other studio in the Rocky Mountain National Park. Many of his paintings focus on nature scenes, specifically views from his studio at the Rocky Mountain National Park. But, he is best known for oil paintings of aspen trees. Eventually, he built a new studio in the Rocky Mountains named Bugscuffle Ranch. It was at this studio that he gave cultural lectures about art on a daily basis to visitors. Stirling also was an author who wrote books of stories and myths about the mountain west.

David Stirling won many awards in his career, not only for his art, but his community involvement too. He received a congratulatory sheepskin from the Governor of Colorado on the 50th anniversary as a resident artist of the Rocky Mountain National Park. He passed away in 1971 in Longmont, Colorado.
