Description:

FRENCH POLYCHROME ENAMEL PLATE OF PSYCHE AND ZEPHYRE
The plate depicts Psyche seated by the rocks, her sisters plotting in the background and Zephyre and Cupid in the purple cloud all encircled by the monstrous winged serpent. Text below Psyche reads "Zephire et Psiche". Plate's verso with four human figures (possibly Cupid) alternating with male and female anthropomorphic birds. Heavily decorated with delicate floral and arabesque lines.

Story: Psyche's family longs for news of her, Cupid remaining unknown to his bride Psyche, allows Zephyr to carry her sisters up for a visit. The sisters are struck by the splendor in which Psyche lives and become envious. To try and undermine Psyche's happiness they convince her to uncover her husband's true identity, since surely as foretold by the oracle she was lying with the vile winged serpent, who would devour her and her child.

Provenance: From the collection of Lucy and Stanley Lopata, by descent.
8" diameter

    Condition:
  • The figural enamel decoration to the central portion of the plate and the rim are in very good overall condition. There is a very slight bruise on the raised forearm of the woman in green dress left of center. And do note the two areas of loss at the bottom left area of the white rim at the very edge of the plate easily seen in our images with other 'flea-bite' losses along that white enameled border. Backside looks to be in good condition as well with no real issues to the bottom of the rim as it would rest on a surface only some minor wear with no bruising noticeable there. There are 2 small bruises to the bottom where the side wall of the plate meet the rim, and you can see one of those small bruises in our 11th of 12 images as shown online to the right near the edge of that image, with the other bruise just a bit less than an inch farther to the right.
