JOHN PINE (BRITISH, 1690-1756) ENGLISH NAVAL ENGRAVING
Hand-colored engraving, plate X (1739) from the series of engravings by Pine, after the ten Armada Tapestries commissioned of Hendrick Cornelisz Vroom (1566-1640) by Lord Howard of Effingham following the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

The original description for this tapestry as follows: "the Spaniards make the best of their way for the Northern Seas; and are, in the meantime, very much battered by the English, who closely pursue them. The chief Galleass is stranded near Calais." The image is surrounded by a train of twenty-two portrait busts of various English naval officers and figures of naval import of the 16th century, including Thomas Howard, Sir Francis Drake (English explorer, sea captain, privateer, naval officer, and politician), Robert Southwell (Vice-Admiral of Norfolk from 1585 to 1598), Captain Christopher Baker (captain of the 'Foresight' during the action against the Armada in 1588), Captain Benjamin Gonson (English Naval Administrator, the first Surveyor of the Royal Navy, and founding member of England's Navy Board), John Hawkins, and many more, decorated further with English Naval coat of arms, floral designs, and putti. Shipping

Shipment is the full responsibility of the buyer. Selkirk will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any items left in Selkirk's possession fifteen (15) days after the sale. If arrangements for shipping have not been made and communicated within thirty (30) days, Selkirk reserves the right, at this time, to charge a storage fee of $10 per lot per day for furniture and large format items and $5 per lot per day for all other items, and within sixty (60) days, at its own discretion, sell any items left on the premises. Accumulated fees resulting from storage and insurance cost will be taken out of any proceeds.

Objects that contain materials of endangered or protected species may be subject to regulations disallowing export and import into other states or countries. It is the buyer's responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations and to obtain any required export or import licenses or certificates and any other required documentation.
