MECHANICAL HOBBY HORSE BY HAHS-GROVES
American (Sikeston, Mo.), 1930s. Rare and early electric coin operated mechanical horse with finely carved wooden highlights including the full head and torso with tail. The metal legs are connected at the torso and lead down to connect to the drive wheels in the base; the metal casing at the base shows a cast iron identification plate showing "HAHS-GOVES CO - SIKESTON MO" with patent numbers.

The Mechanical Hobby Horse was invented by James Otto Hahs of Sikeston, Missouri with the patent acquired early in 1931 and was named "Most Original Invention of 1932" by the National Association of Amusement Parks. It was said that by the end of the 1930s, Hahs had produced over 100 mechanical Hobby Horses.

  • Dimensions: Body: 43 x 51 in. (109.22 x 129.54 cm.), head: 21 1/2 x 34 in. (54.61 x 86.36 cm.)
  • Condition: This horse does not operate and is missing electrical parts. The carved wooden head of the horse is cleanly separated at the neck, and is missing one large red jewel.

Shipping

Shipment is the full responsibility of the buyer. Selkirk will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any items left in Selkirk's possession fifteen (15) days after the sale. If arrangements for shipping have not been made and communicated within thirty (30) days, Selkirk reserves the right, at this time, to charge a storage fee of $10 per lot per day for furniture and large format items and $5 per lot per day for all other items, and within sixty (60) days, at its own discretion, sell any items left on the premises. Accumulated fees resulting from storage and insurance cost will be taken out of any proceeds.

Objects that contain materials of endangered or protected species may be subject to regulations disallowing export and import into other states or countries. It is the buyer's responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations and to obtain any required export or import licenses or certificates and any other required documentation.
