Artist Bio: Philippe Starck was born January 18, 1949 in Paris, France. He grew up inspired by his father, who was an aeronautics engineer. While employed by Adidas, he founded his first industrial design company named Starck Product, later renamed to Ubik. He began working with well known manufacturers in Italy such as Alessi and Kartell, as well as international brands such as Vitra in Switzerland and Disform in Spain.
In 1983, the French President at the time chose Starck to refurbish his private apartments at Elysee. He also designed the Cafe Costes in Paris. Starting in 1989, he designed several buildings in Japan, including the Asahi Beer Hall. He is well known for the many hotels and restaurants he designed throughout his career. These included the Royalton and Paramount hotels in New York, as well as the Hudson and Mondrian hotels in West Hollywood. He also designed the Manin restaurant in Tokyo and Teatriz in Madrid. These are just a few examples of the many hotels and restaurants he designed throughout the world. He was also commissioned several times to design yachts, including one for Steve Jobs. Starck has also designed many furniture pieces, often using natural and sustainable materials materials, seeking to improve quality while reducing cost.

Starck’s pieces can be found in several American and European institutions. This includes the Museum of Modern Art in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Brooklyn Museum and Design Museum in London also house his work. He has been the recipient of several awards including the Design Award in Tokyo, and the Excellence in Design Award from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Recently in 2019, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from Designboom. 28" height, 25" diameter

Shipment is the full responsibility of the buyer. Selkirk will not be responsible for any loss, damage, theft, or otherwise responsible for any items left in Selkirk's possession fifteen (15) days after the sale. If arrangements for shipping have not been made and communicated within thirty (30) days, Selkirk reserves the right, at this time, to charge a storage fee of $10 per lot per day for furniture and large format items and $5 per lot per day for all other items, and within sixty (60) days, at its own discretion, sell any items left on the premises. Accumulated fees resulting from storage and insurance cost will be taken out of any proceeds.

Objects that contain materials of endangered or protected species may be subject to regulations disallowing export and import into other states or countries. It is the buyer's responsibility to be aware of all applicable laws and regulations and to obtain any required export or import licenses or certificates and any other required documentation.
