Description:

NAVAL LETTER FROM THE U.S. BRANDYWINE CIRCA 1840
Handwritten single sheet (folded to four page) letter signed "Your Cousin - W. Talbot Imxtrin" with a date of May (circa 1840s). The letter starts "U. S. Frigate Brandywine - Rio de Janiero" to the upper right front page, and starts "My Dear Imax-", which as the letter reads is a younger family member. It starts with personal writings between the siblings, then gets into issues with leadership, with
"...all men are allowed an opinion and mine is that the Brandywine is as unfortunate a ship in her Commander-and-Chief as we have in the Navy. Commodore Geo. W. Storer just before leaving home, must have deposited for safe keeping, in the hands of some friends all the finer feelings of his nature, while he most seriously retained and brought with him, all the pique, envy malice etc. that his withered unhappy himself - he left no stone unturned that can possibly add to the annoyance of those under his command. So far I have escaped all difficulties, but amid the frequent court martials and inspections that are taking place, I am in constant fear lest I may in some moment of thoughtlessness commit myself. We have had several wordy wars already however I go constantly on the alert. . . . "
