RUDOLPH TORRINI (AMERICAN, 1923-2018)
Unicorn
Bronzed ceramic, elegant form of a unicorn atop rectangular base, signed and dated 1974.

About the Artist: Rudolph "Rudy" Torrini, bookended by his image as a Rodin contemporary and a teacher of Cassilly, marked his career by his public monuments ranging in site from the City Museum to within the Gateway Arch, leaving a sprawling legacy across the St. Louis region.

Torrini started his art career propelled by the artistic natures of his parents as well as the ventures of his youth. The artist was born in St. Louis, the son of an Italian immigrant mold maker and a silent-movie pianist. Already having ventured into jazz saxophone to support his family as a teenager, then serving in the Navy in 1942, a clarinetist of his ship's band, as well as performing in the Naval band at Franklin Delano Roosevelt's funeral in 1945. Torrini emerged with an artistic proclivity that swiftly earned him a BFA at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts at Washington University. After studying in Florence, he began teaching first at Nerinx Hall in Webster Groves, then at Webster College, then chaired the Art Department at Fontbonne College. Still loyal to his musical roots, Torrini pursued jazz throughout the 70's, performing in a sextet throughout St. Louis concurrently with his growing body of artistic work in the area.

Primarily based in Webster Groves, Torrini was the recipient of the Honorary Lifetime Achievement in the Arts Award there, on top of Knighthoods from the Italian Government in 1973 and 77, and a Gold Medal from the Italian city of Lucca for contributions to Italian-American culture in 1990. 9" height
