Artist Bio: Ryan McGinley, an artist from Ramsey, New Jersey, was born October 17, 1977. During his adolescence, he found himself gravitating towards street culture. He found companionship with a group of self-proclaimed "outsiders". This included graffiti artists, skateboarders, indie musicians and LGBTQ youth. What simply started as candid photos of his friends are now seen as iconic photographs capturing the essence of his generation. "These early photographs show beautiful, young, nude, and androgynous youth raving, getting high, skinny dipping, hanging precariously from rooftops, shoplifting, running, falling, cavorting, and living with hedonistic abandon, exuberance, and rebellion".

McGinley attended the Parsons School of Design in New York, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2000. That same year he hosted his first solo show in New York's SoHo neighborhood inside an abandoned warehouse. He sent his self-published catalogue, The Kids Are Alright, to artists, editors, and curators whom he admired. Sylvia Wolf, a curator of photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York showed interest in his work. At the age of 25, he had a solo show at the Whitney Museum of American Art, the youngest to do so in thirty years. His other bodies of work include Sun and Health (2006), which depicts his friends living carefree against the American landscape. Another publication, I Know Where the Summer Goes (2008), shows his team traveling nude across the great outdoors. He used fog machines and fireworks to add a touch of surrealism to his work.

Many of McGinley's collections depict nudity and youth and a sense of optimistic liveliness. He has gained much notoriety in his career, and is featured at a plethora of highly regarded artistic institutions. Including: Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León in Spain, MoMa in New York, the Daelim Museum in Seoul, and Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing. He currently lives and works in New York.
