Description:

VICTORIAN INLAID ROSEWOOD TANTALUS.
Circa 1880, foliate inlay to exterior,"Liqueurs" inlayed to lid opening to reveal satinwood-lined interior with removable satinwood and ebonized wood decanter and cordial holder, with four crystal decanters, six matching cordials and six assorted cordials. 10"h. 11.5"w. 11.5"d.

  • Condition: A fine unit overall. A very small age crack to the veneer on top-back-right corner, and another central right side leading to and stopping just into the "Liqueurs" inlay on top (both hardly worth mentioning). Pull out tray holding the entire contents of four stoppered decanters and 12 glasses is structurally sound, with small chips to 2 of the corner supports that appear to be gutta percha. When you remove the tray from the rosewood box, there is a side-to-side crack near the back to the interior bottom of the box, but is fine and looks natural and does not effect the integrity of the box. The 4 bottles themselves seem to be in fine condition with no chips apparent at top, and the door knob style faceted stoppers are good, although 1 of them has about a 1/4 inch chip at an edge. There are 3 different style of glassed - 6 of the heavily pressed octagonal stems seem to match the bottles (3 of those with small noticeable chips at the base, 1 broken into two piece at top of stem) - 4 lightly etched stems OK - 2 similar to the last with reeded stems).
